(Our trail begins in the Humber Bridge Country Park, near the public toilet block. Use ‘View on map’ from the trail’s homepage to reach point ‘1’ and the start of the trail).
The Humber Bridge was officially opened by Her Majesty The Queen on 17th July 1981 and, with a main span of 1410m, it became the longest single span suspension bridge in the world. This mantle was taken over by the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge in Japan, when it opened on 5th April 1998, but the Humber Bridge arguably remains one of the finest examples of British engineering.
This archive image shows the bridge’s construction well underway in 1978. Obviously, today the view is much more obscured by trees.
