Southburn Enclosure Map (1797)

This is a typical ‘Enclosure’ map, which was produced to show parish & township boundaries, enclosed and open fields, farms, settlements, and rural land ownership in connection with the allotment of common land to private owners.

(Early maps such as this tend to be far less accurate than their modern counterparts.  It’s been overlaid onto our base map to give you a very general comparison of past & present, but should not be taken as a completely accurate representation of the landscape at that time)
